In molecular biology and genetics, transcription is the process of copying (transcribing) DNA to an RNA, especially messenger RNA (mRNA) by the enzyme RNA polymerase.

  • Transcription begins when RNA polymerase binds to a promoter sequence near the beginning of a gene.
  • RNA polymerase uses one of the DNA strands (the template strand) as a template to make a new, complementary RNA molecule.
  • RNA polymerase incorporates A, U, G, C nucleotides for T, A, C, G on DNA template, respectively.
